The year 2020 had a dream start for Tollywood with two huge earners in the first two weeks of the year. But then tragedy struck!
Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapuramulooo became the biggest Non-Baahubali hit thrashing records in India and overseas. Allu Arjun became a pan-Indian name with the success of the film even though the film released in only Telugu language. Mahesh Babu’s Sarileru Neekevvaru also was a mammoth blockbuster and turned out to be Mahesh’s first genuine 100 crore share film. These two films released during the Sankranthi festival and utilized the holiday season to the maximum. Rajinikanth’s Darbar and Kalyan Ram’s Enthamanchivadavuraa, also released during the same festive season, came out as croppers.
After that, there was a lull at the box office as all the high profile releases flopped one after the other. Vijay Deverakonda’s World Famous Lover turned out to be the biggest disappointment followed by Ravi Teja’s Disco Raja and Dil Raju’s Jaanu. By the end of February, there was some respite as Nithiin’s Bheeshma and Vishwak Sen’s HIT turned out to be solid successes. But their run was shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some other films like Palasa, O Pitta Katha also released in the month of March but none of them could create any mark.
The coronavirus isn’t over yet and the coming days are going to be very dark for Tollywood. No one knows when things will become normal and people will throng to theaters to watch movies. As of now, everything stands unpredictable.
Let’s hope for the best!
