Macho Hero Gopichand’s last hit is Loukyam which released in 2014. He followed it up with Six flops thereafter. His market is depleting with every flop and he is keen on making a strong comeback. So, he chose a spy thriller titled Chanakya. Let us see how the audience receives it in the theaters.
Arjun (Gopichand) is a RAW Agent in the disguise of a Bank Employee (as Ramakrishna). He is an Orphan who takes his colleagues and their families as his own family. Sohail (Upen Patel), son of the most wanted terrorist kidnaps his RAW friends and challenge Arjun shifting the story to Karachi. The rest of the story is how Arjun saves his colleagues even after RAW disowns him.
Gopichand is at his usual self in the comedy and romantic episodes in the first half and is also a perfect fit as a RAW agent. Heroines – Mehreen and Zareen Khan have got trivial roles. Zareen Khan sizzled in a hot number. Sunil’s comedy worked out but Ali has disappointed. Raghu Babu as the Bank Manager and Nassar as RAW Chief are okay in whatever they are offered. The rest of the characters are fine.
Director Thiru failed in his debut directorial. The story he selected is routine and he failed to create any interest with shoddy screenplay and routine scenes. Abburi Ravi’s dialogues are decent. The camera work by Vetri Palanisamy is fine especially the scenes in Karachi. Songs composed by Vishal Chandrasekhar are okay and the background score is good. Editing should have been better in the first half. Production Values of AK Entertainments are good.
The first half of the film is flat with the irrelevant Romantic Track taking the center stage and the comedy being routine. A couple of action sequences in the Raw Backdrop are good. The Second half of the film is also not exciting. The Operation in Karachi is very routinely executed. Those who watched several films in the Backdrop of Terrorism and Counter-Terrorist Operations find the proceedings silly. The output would have been better if the Director copies some of those films. Finally, Gopichand may have bagged another failure and the wait continues.
