Disco Raja Review

Movie: Disco Raja

Rating: 2.5/5

Director:  Vi Anand

Behind the Scenes:

Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja is struggling a lot in recent years. He is bogged down by back to back failures and his market is eroding with every film. He has opted for a film with Sci-Fi tough to change his track and also tried hard to appear fresh and fit in the film. Let us see how the movie is received by the audience.

Vasu (Ravi Teja) is a brain dead person and in a science experiment, he regains consciousness but loses his memory. He comes up with an idea to get into a dispute with a local politician that puts him in the spotlight. Later, it emerges as Sethu (Bobby Simha) and Disco Raj (Ravi Teja) are related to Vasu. Who is Disco Raj? Who is Sethu? What are they connected to Vasu? What happens in the end? Forms the rest.

Ravi Teja gave his everything to the role which is different from what the directors usually visualize him in. His energy is intact and he always managed to get the much-needed swag for the Disco Raj character. There are three heroines – Nabha Natesh, Tanya Hope and Paayal Rajput who come at various parts of the story and they reunite at the end. Nabha and Payal were good at whatever they are given. Bobby Simha is excellent but his character would have been written better. Sunil is okay while Vennela Kishore is good as always. Satya is alright while the rest of the actors are alright.

Technical Performances:

VI Anand suffered the same problem as his previous films. He chooses a good story with an interesting premise. He manages to write a few good scenes which invoke interest but later struggles to use the freshness of the core point. If the second part is dealt with the same setup of the first half, things would have been a lot different. Thaman managed to score a couple of chartbusters and they are well shot as well. The background score is good at places. The camera work is excellent and editing could have been a lot better. The movie feels so long despite a decent runtime. Production Values are excellent.

Disco Raja has got an okay first half. The sci-fi angle, the setup, and the dialogues give the necessary interest to the proceedings. The opening block and the Pre-Interval bang are impressive. The first half leaves the audience geared up for what follows the net. However, the director squandered the opportunity by not sticking to the core point. He tries to commercialize the second half with routine entertainment bringing in a lot of comedians and character artists. The second half throws aside the sci-fi angle and gets into a routine gangster drama boring the audience. The stretched climax further bores the audience. When the director let goes the only unique selling point of his film, audience loses connect midway and the movie fell apart. Finally, Disco Raja is a lost opportunity for Ravi Teja as well as VI Anand.
