Donga Movie Review

Movie: Donga

Rating: 2.5/5

Director: Jeethu Joseph

Behind the Scenes:

After a long wait and a series of failures, Tamil Hero Karthi managed to stage a comeback with his recent release, Khaidi. He has now teamed up with his sister-in-law, Jyothika in Donga directed by Jeethu Joseph. The movie has released today as Christmas Special amid huge competition. Let us see how the movie is received by the audience.

Story:

Vicky (Karthi) is a petty thief in Goa. Gyanmurthy (Sathyaraj) is a rich politician and Vicky comes to his house in the disguise as his son. Vicky plans to run away with the money after gaining trust with the family. However, his plans get foiled by Sathyaraj’s daughter Parvathy (Jyothika). Who is this Vikky? Why did he come to Gyanmurthy’s house as his son? What happens next? forms the rest of the story.

Performances:

After an excellent performance in Khaidi, Karthi comes up with another in Donga. He is excellent as a thief but his getup should have been better His Telugu dubbing is superb. Jyothika is brilliant in her role and it is a perfect comeback. Sathyaraj steals the show as a rich politician with his character having different variations. Sita and the other artists are good in their roles.

Technical Performances:

Jeethu Joseph came up with a simple storyline that is tested several times but tried to give it a fresh look with a water-tight screenplay with enough twists and turns. His detailing and character establishment are good. But the problem is that he failed to execute the script and is only partially successful. Cinematography by R. D. Rajasekhar is top-notch as he captured the natural Ooty locations nicely The background score is good but songs fail to register. Editing by VS Vinayak is fine. Production values are appropriate.

Analysis:

The first half of the film is dull with some good comedy here and there. In the second half, the twists are well-written and the suspense factor is well maintained until the pre-climax of the film. But things do drop towards the end of the film. After the suspense is revealed, the last 20 minutes or so will bore you. Donga has that promise but fails to deliver.
