Gang Review

Movie: Gang

Rating: 2.75/5

Direction: Vignesh Shivan

Behind the Screens:

Tamil Star Hero Suriya who once has the market on par with Star heroes of Telugu Cinema Industry in Andhra Pradesh and Nizam is slowly losing it after delivering back to back flops. So, a hit with this film is very important for the actor to keep his market intact. He is trying his luck once again with his today release, Gang. Let us see how the movie has fared with the audience.

Gang is a heist film set in a period backdrop of 1980’s, Suriya and his Gang will pose as CBI agents to loot money from the rich. After many such heists, a real CBI office is on their tail. Do the culprits get caught? is the rest of the story is all about.

Star Shine:

Gang is easily the One-Man Show by Suriya. The movie showcases the jubilant side of Suriya. The actor had dubbed himself for his role for the first time in Telugu and the dubbing sounds awkward. Keerthy Suresh is pretty and good in a couple of scenes. Ramya Krishna adds a lot of value and dignity to the role she is offered. Brahmanandham is seen in a few hilarious and he is okay. Senior Actor Karthik is seen as a sincere investigative officer and he is fine. Rest of the characters are okay.

Gang’s story is the remake of Bollywood hit film, Special 26. It is actually inspired by a real-life incident in 1987 when a group posing as CBI raided a jewelry showroom in Mumbai and stole around 35 lakhs. Director Vignesh Shivan lifted some scenes from Special 26 and also made some changes to the original. Even though the changes are good, they do not blend well with the story. Some of the lifted scenes are not well conceived.

Anirudh Ravichander’s songs are hit in Tamil but are lost in the dubbing. The changes to the film are mostly to accommodate songs. Dinesh Krishnan’s camera work is colorful while Sreekar Prasad’s editing is good. Art Director Kiran should be appreciated for his excellent detailing. But the grading used does not resemble a film of 80s. Production Values are Appropriate.

The first half of the film is good with some engaging moments narrated in an entertaining manner. But the songs act as speed breakers. But then, the second half becomes a little intense but drags a bit here and there. The pace is not up to the mark post the interval while we expect a racy ride. Finally, Gang ends up as an average but enjoyable fare. It may have crossed the line if there are a few more high points, particularly in the second half.
