Mahanati Review

Movie: Mahanati

Rating: 3.25/5.0

Director: Nag Ashwin

Behind the Screens:

Mahanati Savitri’s life is intriguing as she mounted to riches through hard work and immense talent but later suffered a pitiable end to her life as she passed away in stressful poverty. The life story is made as a biopic film – Mahanati. Let us see how the movie releasing today fares with the audience.

Storyline:

Legendary Actress Savitri is called Mahanati for no simple reason. The first choice actress for stars back then earned immense fame and money. But then, her life ended with pitiable conditions that arose to financial mismanagements and problems that arose due to her love with Gemini Ganeshan. Mahanati is an attempt to bring her real and reel life to the audience.

Star Shine:

The title Mahanati is born for Savitri and it is very difficult for anyone to play her. But Keerthy Suresh with very little experience managed to act close. She pulled off an award-winning performance for sure. Samantha as Journalist Madhuravani is apt. Her performance at the close is wonderful. Dulquer Salman as Gemini Ganeshan and Vijay Deverakonda as Anthony are good. Every one of those who appeared in cameos – Naga Chaitanya as ANR, Avasarala Srinivas as LV Prasad, Mohan Babu as SVR, Prakash Raj as Chakrapani, Rajendra Prasad as Savitri’s Uncle and others have performed really well.

Technical:

Director Nag Ashwin stunned everyone with his second film itself. The subject he chose and the cast he picked up for the film are exemplary. The slow pace which comes into picture here and there is an issue. He is also able to draw good performances from his cast. The artwork is appealing while the songs by Mickey J Meyer are soothing and blends perfectly into the story. The background score suits the mood of the film. Camera work by Dani is very good especially the retro look in the Second half. Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao’s Editing is good. He could not do much about the length as the story demands it.

Analysis:

Director Nag Ashwin did some profound research into the life of Savitri and tried to stay true to the history. He got a perfect cast and the drama in Savitri’s life helped the cause as well. But then as in the case of most of the biopics, the film suffered due to the slow pace at times. If the slow pace and documentary style narration are ignored, we get to see a good biopic of the Legendary actress. The offline image of Savitri will help us connect to her plight towards the end and then a mix of emotions will engulf the audience. The team did an excellent job in not showing Savitri’s mortal remains at the end and that too with a perfect justification. For sure, the movie will win many accolades and awards, it has to be seen how the movie performs commercially at the box office as it is mostly an A Center film.
