Meeku Maathrame Cheptha Movie Review

Movie: Meeku Maathrame Cheptha

Rating: 2.5/5

Director: Shammer Sultan

Behind The Scenes:

Meeku Mathrame Chepthe is no high-concept film but a new-age comedy with a unique idea for the premise. Produced by Youth sensation Vijay Deverakonda and Tharun Bhascker in the lead role, the film has generated decent buzz in the trade and the audience. Let us review and find out if this film adds brand value to Deverakonda’s stardom, or it tarnished his image as a producer.

The film is about Rakesh, played by Tharun Bhascker, who, in an effort to woo his fiancee played by Vani Bhojan, has promised her that he is a teetotaler. But when a compromising private video of his gets leaked online just two days before his marriage, all hell breaks loose. What follows is a comedy where Tharun, his friend Abhinav and the whole gang of his friends try to find the culprit who uploaded the private video.

Tharun Bhascker has surprised the audience with excellent performance. He was decent in Falaknuma Das, but in this film, he has shown his flair for comedy too. However, the highlight of the movie has to be Abhinav Gomatam, who steals the show with his brilliant comic timing. He has crackling chemistry with Tharun, which makes the proceedings enjoyable even if there is not much meat in the scenes. Anasuya Bharadwaj, Vani Bhojan, Avantika Mishra, and others have delivered decent performances, but their characters could have been etched out in a better way.

The film is made on a shoe-string budget, and that shows on the screen in terms of production values, which makes it look like a short film. Cinematography by Mathan is functional. The editing could have been better in the second half, and some of the scenes drag on. The dialogues are witty and quite funny in some places. There aren’t many songs out of which the promotional song ‘Nuvve Hero’ featuring Vijay Deverakonda, which comes at the end, is okay.

The first half has some enjoyable comedy, but the fun doesn’t last in the second half. The plot goes haywire with no redeeming elements in the latter part of the film. The poor writing, the cheap production values, no great music hamper its prospects at the ticket window. The movie might be appreciated by a small section of audiences who like this kind of urban comedy, but for the regular audience, this film offers nothing. Vijay Deverakonda’s affair with bad luck continues as Meeku Maathrame Cheptha will fetch him neither awards nor rewards. The film will eventually not go very far at the box-office.
