Sanju Movie Review

Movie: Sanju

Rating: 3.25/5

Behind the Screens:

Sanjay Dutt’s life is unarguably the most controversial in Bollywood with several shades. Rajkumar Hirani who is known for sensible films has made this Biopic Project and there are several expectations on the film as Ranbir Kapoor is apt looking as the actor. Let us see if this Biopic Project will strike a chord with the audience or not.

Storyline:

Sanju is the life story of Controversial Actor, Sanjay Dutt played by Ranbir Kapoor. The film begins with Sanjay Dutt (Ranbir Kapoor) exploring for a writer for his biography even while he’s preparing to surrender himself to the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Arms Act case. The movie touches various phases of Sanjay Dutt’s life – his successes, Affairs with several women, Addiction to Drugs, Terrorism Allegations etc.

Star Shine:

Ranbir Kapoor is apt as Sanjay Dutt. He is an exact replica of the Bollywood Actor with some excellent makeup. He also worked hard to mimic the body language of Sanjay Dutt. Manisha Koirala as Mother Nargis, Paresh Rawal as Father Sunil Dutt are excellent. Dia Mirza as Sanjay Dutt’s Second Wife Manyatha and Vikky Kaushal as his friend are good. Anushka Sharma is seen as the writer of Sanjay Dutt’s Biography.

Technical:

Rajkumar Hirani rocked once again in showcasing a controversial biopic effectively with so many shades. He excelled both as a writer and as a director with Sanju. Importantly, the efforts to get Ranbir Kapoor into the skin of Sanjay Dutt’s character are laudable. AR Rahman’s music is good. Some of the songs of Sanjay Dutt are used. The Production Values are excellent. Editing by the director himself is also impressive.

Analysis:

Sanju even though a Biopic has all ingredients of a Bollywood Commercial Entertainer. Sanjay Dutt’s Entry to Stardom with his debut movie, Rocky is the opening scene. And from there, his ups and downs in the career as well as life are showcased under the influence of drugs. His struggle to come out of the mess is neatly shown but he immediately finds himself in the arms. The director interestingly showcased Sanjay Dutt’s version of getting into the mess without damaging his personal image. Sanjay Dutt surprises everyone at the end with a little cameo. Finally, Sanju is an impressive biopic on a man with so many shades and one who’s lived a life of such extremes. Ranbir Kapoor’s act as the controversial actor is exemplary.
