Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya Movie Review

Movie: Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopsya

Rating: 2.5/5

Director: Venkatesh Maha

Behind the Scenes:

Director Venkatesh Maha created magic with his first film, Care of Kancharapalem. With his natural portrayal of the people and emotions, it has come as a surprise when he chose a remake for his next project. The movie, Uma Maheshwara Ugraroopsya has skipped its theatrical release and is releasing online directly on Netflix. Let us see how the movie connects with the audience.

Story:

Mahesh (Satyadev) is a small-time photographer in Araku. One day, he unexpectedly gets into a fight with a ruffian when he actually tries to stop a fight. It was then he vows to not wear chappals until he beats the ruffian. But unexpected things happen in his challenge. What are those challenges? What happens next in his challenge? form the rest of the story.

Performances:

The casting in the film is superb. Satyadev is a rockstar and is here to stay. He performed effortlessly and sleep-walked through the character. It is very difficult to match Fahad Fazil who played the Original but Satyadev does a fine job. Roopa Koduvayur does a good job in the character of a rude girl, Jyothi. Suhas gets a fine character and performed really well. Senior Naresh as Babji is excellent.

Technical Performances:

Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya is the official remake of 2016 Malayalam Blockbuster, Maheshinte Prathikaram. Venkatesh Maha who created magic with his first film, Care of Kancharapalem tried his best to recreate the magic of the Original. However, he is only succeeded partially. There is too much Malayalam flavor in the film. Slow proceedings and weak conflict point is a letdown. Dialogues are excellent.

Bijibal’s background score and songs, especially Ningi Chutte, suits the mood of the story and are very appealing. The camera work by Appu Prabhakar suits the Uttarandhra nativity. The movie’s runtime is long, particularly in the second half. Production values are appropriate.

Analysis:

Malayali films often have a wafer-thin story. But the filmmakers there do an excellent job with excellent casting and emotions. They look very ordinary when we hear but the magic happens on screen. The expectations are high when such a film was chosen by Venkatesh Maha who delivered the class of a film like Care of Kancharapalem. He tried to be faithful to the subject and in the process could not recreate the magic. The proceedings are slow and the conflict point is not great. The only plus points are excellent casting and some natural proceedings. Finally, Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya is at a passable affair. That too only because you are watching it on OTT.
