A once great critic had mentioned how important in Tamil Nadu the Deepawali tradition is, “An early morning bath with oil, a wonderful breakfast with sumptuous sweets, wearing new clothes, and watching a Diwali superstar release is what makes the festival special.” In the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, superstars like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan used to have regular Diwali releases. Later, Thalapathy Vijay and Thala Ajith, too, had locked horns during the Diwali festival, which used to turn into fan frenzy all over.

For Kollywood fans watching their favorite superstar get a Diwali release is more prestigious than even the Pongal festival date. For the last two years, Thalapathy Vijay has been holding on to the Diwali festival date, just like how Dabanng Khan Salman in Bollywood has a monopoly over Eid releases. Vijay has delivered two blockbusters Mersal and Sarkar, in the last two years, and he seems to be on a hat-trick with Bigil (Whistle in Telugu). Thuppakki, one of Vijay’s landmark hits, also was released on Diwali in 2012. Bigil is releasing on 4000+ screens all over the world, which is a record in Tamil Nadu.

Karthi starrer Kaithi (Khaidhi in Telugu) will also release during this festive season to garner the audience’s attention, but Vijay’s Bigil has taken the lion share of screens. Both films are backed by renowned production houses. Bigil is bankrolled by AGS Entertainment while Kaithi is produced by Dream Warrior Pictures.

Bigil is clearly having an upper hand and is the more preferred film among distributors and exhibitors due to Vijay’s craze at the moment. The producer of Bigil Archana Kalpathy has recently revealed that the film has cost them a whopping Rs 180 crore. Mahesh Koneru has bought the Telugu rights of Bigil for 10 crores, which is the highest for a Vijay starrer in Telugu states.

Both the films have got a U/A Certificate, with Bigil having a run time of 179 minutes while Kaithi’s length is of 147 minutes. Not just in Kollywood, but in Tollywood also all eyes and talking points in the film trade and fans are on the epic clash between Vijay’s Bigil and Karthi’s Kaithi.
